Wellness & Fitness

Making sure individuals with Down syndrome stay active and healthy through their ever-increasing life expectancy is of prime importance to the DSAJ. We offer many different avenues to achieve the goals of health, weight loss, team sports and team dance. People with other IDDs (intellectual and developmental differences) are also welcome to join the Wellness & Fitness groups, although pricing may vary for those with and without Down syndrome.

Yoga and a Smoothie

Stretch classes focus on building strength, developing regulation skills through breathing, improving mobility and maintaining/improving overall health and emotional well-being. 

Music Therapy with Connecting Thru Music

Providing music therapy and related music services which will enhance the cognitive, social, emotional, physical, development growth of the children with special needs. 

Dance Class with All in Arts

These one hour dance classes offered via zoom are a great way to improve flexibility, strength, and motor skills by learning fun and challenging dance routines put to upbeat music guaranteed to boost confidence and self-esteem. 

Buddy Up Tennis

Buddy Up Tennis is a high energy adaptive tennis and fitness program for children and adults with Down syndrome..

Down to Box

High energy, targeted boxing training program specifically catered towards individual needs and abilities. For individuals ages 14 and older with an intellectual or developmental difference..

Reading Series

A Summer Reading Series offered every Tuesday during the summer months. This program will introduce a love for books by using song, movement, and rhyme.

Sign Language Basics

Fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL) whereby our families develop expressive and receptive language skills through the learning of basic vocabulary, grammatical structures, and cultural awareness.

Basketball

The DSAJ Basketball program is offered to individuals with intellectual and developmental differences ages 8 and up. The players are grouped into teams based on age and ability. Our Basketball program is held at Hendricks Avenue Baptist Church each Spring and is led by Coach JP. Soccer

The DSAJ Soccer program is offered to individuals with intellectual and developmental differences ages 4 and up. The players are grouped into teams based on age and soccer skills. Our purpose is to provide an environment in which everyone can participate, exercise safely, learn how to play and make friends.

STARZ Dance Team

The DSAJ Starz Dance Team season runs January through May. Our Starz compete in local competitions and perform at various events in the community. Boys and girls are both welcome to participate. Our dancers are led by coach Dani Frei.

VIRTUAL

Yoga & A Smoothie

These adaptive stretch classes focus on building strength, developing regulation skills through breathing, improving mobility and maintaining/improving overall health and emotional well-being. The physical sequences are similar from week to week to build confidence, encourage exploration, gain a sense of empowerment and independence, as well as increasing mobility, strength and balance. After each yoga session there will be a smoothie making class where individuals will learn how to make healthy and revitalizing smoothies that taste great too!
