DSAJ Becomes A Service Provider With Vocational Rehabilitation

The Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville is thrilled to announce that we are now a service provider with Vocational Rehabilitation. What does that mean for our families? This distinction allows the DSAJ team to receive additional support that will connect individuals with Down syndrome with competitively paid employment.

You may be thinking… “Wait, I thought the DSAJ already did that!” And you are RIGHT! Our team has been successfully connecting those we serve with jobs at local businesses for years – and even providing training and on-site job coaching. The difference is that, until now, our efforts were largely independent.

What this Means for Us and Those We Serve

Now that the DSAJ will receive additional support for this type of work, our fundraising dollars will make an even greater impact on our other programs and services. At its core, becoming a service provider with vocational rehabilitation is an expansion of our Career Solutions initiative – and it’s really formalizing the work we’ve already been doing on behalf of individuals with Down syndrome. We understand the challenges and barriers that currently exist within the job force. But we also recognize the strengths and values that individuals with Down syndrome possess. The DSAJ team is beyond thrilled that we can further support our individuals throughout their entire employment process by ensuring they receive all the support they need to succeed.

What This Means for Local Employers

To employers who may be interested in hiring someone with Down syndrome – and those who are already working with us to provide these awesome opportunities – please don’t hesitate to reach out and take the next steps with our association. We are ready to provide you with a holistic support system designed to create and maintain a successful working relationship with your newest star employee. We will work one-on-one with your employee, providing any additional training as well as education and awareness training for your existing team to ensure there is a comfortable work environment for all.
